I grew up a very conservative Christian and still practice the Faith of my youth. I understood that part of being a faithful daughter of God was that “we don’t touch the evil things” and as Paul wrote we do well to “avoid the appearance of evil.”
To me, and my understanding, astrology was evil.
There wasn’t a lot of charge to it. I wasn’t upset by it. I didn’t feel the need to argue with anyone or convince them that they were wrong, it just simply was.
I had no desire or need to even examine the subject.
Then, everything changed.
My shift in awareness came as I was going through a divorce from a violent, chaotic and unfaithful marriage. As happens when one goes through something that cracks you wide open, I was more humble and receptive at that time of my life.
The things that I thought were “true” turned out not to be – things like “if you are a good wife and you pour yourself into the marriage it will all work out.” I was devastated and broken. I couldn’t make heads or tails of how I got here and more importantly how to avoid it happening again.
I turned to God. Just like I always had.
I sought direction, guidance and discernment. I poured my heart out to Him and was receptive in a way that I never really had been before.
As this was unfolding, I relocated hundreds of miles away as part of the separation process. My dear friend had lived in my new hometown her whole life, so I followed a lot of her recommendations for the best restaurants, the gym she went to, etc. So naturally, I went to her hair gal when I needed a trim.
My friend’s name is Juli and she is a very authentic, eccentric person. She is sassy and passionate and does not give a flying flip what anyone thinks of her. I love her fierce authenticity.
A talented stylist, Juli cut hair out of her house when she wasn’t teaching at the hair school. She swears like a sailor, drinks wine while cutting at work and has a detailed tattoo of Edward Scissorhands on her forearm.
One day, we got to chatting and she tells me she’s really into astrology and asks me my birthday after going over a bit about my life for the previous 10 minutes. I told her politely “I’m a Sagittarius but I don’t really resonate with any of that stuff. ”
Ignoring my protest, she says “Okay! Do you know the minute you were born?”
“Of course I do,” I tell her. I thought that was something EVERYONE just knew because I looked up my vital documents when I was 9 years old and clearly remember the moment of looking at my birth certificate and say the time of 6:57am there. It has been a time I’ve carried in my heart ever since and it never occurred to me that people didn’t know that.
Turns out, less than 10% of people do know the moment they were born with total confidence and that happened to work out divinely in my favor that day.
Juli plugged my info in on a website from her phone and declared “Oh! Of course you know the minute you were born – your moon is in Virgo, which is very detail-oriented and is quite different from your fiery Sagittarius Sun!”
And then she launched into a 10 minute series of very specific, odd and highly accurate observations and interpretations of my chart. I felt amazed, intrigued and very vulnerable.
I never even knew that there was more to astrology than just “what’s your sign” and the horoscopes in the newspaper. But what Juli was shedding light on about myself, my life, my tendencies, why I married the men that I did, and even right now to my neurotic way that I am distracted by things that are out of place, yet will not correct them until after people leave the room was uncanny.
She knew me.
Even more? She split wide open the world that I thought I knew. Not just because she had information about me that I couldn’t find anywhere else, but because I felt God in it.
Juli’s information awoke a Divine affinity for astrology and Human Design in me.
It brings me to tears even now thinking about it. I have such a tender and real relationship with my Great and Powerful God. I had come to rely on Him with total dependence to climb out of such horrific circumstances. I knew that I could not have become free of that awful situation without God literally lifting me up and out of it.
God is EVERYTHING to me and I would never, could never do anything that would go against Him.
And so it is with astrology. Just because a magic trick is cool, doesn’t mean that it has merit or truth in it. But I couldn’t deny what I felt. I knew there was Truth in what I’d heard.
So I launched into research, apparently true to my Sagittarius, truth-seeking nature. And my Virgo Moon is very oriented to what is RIGHT vs WRONG. And my Projector Aura in Human Design is that of one that masters systems so that I can guide others in the synthesis of wisdom that I can glean only from becoming a total and complete expert in the thing.
What I discovered was pretty remarkable, actually.
Astronomy is the study of the physical celestial bodies in the sky: the Sun, Moon, the planets and asteroids, etc.
Astrology is the study of the meaning of those celestial bodies.
Astronomy and astrology used to be one in the same. It started to split into two separate areas of study in the 17th century and by the 19th they were regarded as totally different.
As a God-centered person, I am attuned to symbolism, allegories, parables and the layers of meaning that are in the mundane.
Astrology is just that. It is all about the meaning of these incredible objects and points in space and how they help us.
The planets don’t determine our lives. They mirror back to us what is happening.
As above, so below.
Ancient wisdom.
And with the lens of how much God loves us and is always seeking to provide resources and guidance for us, I found more than enough evidence that this is another area where we can find light and love and peace and truth.
It turns out that the moon has been ORDAINED for us. In Psalms 8 verses 3 and 4: When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained; What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him? (emphasis added)
The most obvious in the Bible is the story of how the wise men, the magi, found the Christ child by reading the stars and interpreting their meaning.
They had to understand that the stars and the movement of them wasn’t just something beautiful or even strictly scientific. There was real bearing for their lives on literally the most important event in all of human history in them.
How could looking to the stars and contemplating on the meaning of them for a God-centered, faith-filled person be evil?
“But the Bible says astrology is evil.”
I realize that some of the culture of “the church” (whichever church you belong to or were influenced by) says that astrology is evil. Some verses in the Bible sure make it seem like that. Let’s take a look.
In Isaiah 47:13-14 it says: “Thou art wearied in the multitude of thy counsels. Let now the astrologers, the stargazers, the monthly prognosticators, stand up, and save thee from these things that shall come upon thee. Behold, they shall be as stubble; the fire shall burn them; they shall not deliver themselves from the power of the flame: there shall not be a coal to warm at, nor fire to sit before it.”
This is referring to turning to anything other than God for counsel. Even things that have truth and light in them, if they are not centered on God, it becomes a false idol. If we rely too heavily on anything be it astrology or science or the government or our formal education, we will fall and be “burned up” so to say because we are not focused on what matters the most.
And then in Daniel, as in Daniel in the Lion’s Den, we learn about how King Nebuchadnezzar was really struggling with some disturbing dreams. And so he did as a king would do back then. In Daniel 2 verse 2 it says: “Then the king commanded to call the magicians, and the astrologers, and the sorcerers, and the Chaldeans, for to shew the kind his dreams. So they came and stood before the king.”
The king was so distraught by this that he threatened their lives if they couldn’t accurately interpret it. It came back to the king that there was literally no one on earth who could give him the meaning and that he would have to turn to a divine source. The king didn’t like this answer to he ordered all of the wise men to be killed, which included Daniel. He was classified among the astrologers, et al. Daniel was an astrologer.
The answer he was able to deliver to the king was from God, and he clearly gives the glory and credit to God, but he was able to interpret the symbolism of it through his spiritual gifts that come directly from God.
Often, astrology is seen as synonymous with sorcery in religious context
Just to clear that up, the actual definition of astrology is: the study of the movements and relative positions of celestial bodies interpreted as having an influence on human affairs and the natural world.
This is not sorcery.
Perhaps it was common that people who called upon magic, or rather a demonic god, to assist them in their practices ALSO studied astrology. But that does not make them one and the same any more than someone who worships the devil and also uses essential oils makes essential oils wrong.
It has been determined that astrology originated out of Babylon and that they used it for the purposes of predicting the future and sought counsel from astrology rather than going to God. I read an interesting book last year called 12 Signs 12 Sons, in which the author draws the conclusion, after being a harsh critic to astrology for many years, that the personality side of astrology was actually given to Jacob, who became Israel, and that his 12 sons are actually the 12 Zodiac signs.
Revelation 22:2 reads in a different way when you consider this: “In the midst of the street of it, and on either side of the river, was there the tree of life, which bare twelve manner of fruits, and yielded her fruit every month: and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.”
It was when the children of Israel, who had been taught the personality aspects of astrology, were taken captive into Babylon that astrology was infused with the predictive elements, which is where the wheels came off for substituting it for God.
I love how Steven Forrest puts it: “Why is there such a vigorous contempt for astrology among many religiously-conservative people? The truth is that this cultural vitriol derives less from what is actually in the Bible and more from later developments in Christian theology. In a nutshell, Jesus came and went, but then the bureaucrats arrived and, mostly for political reasons, they didn’t like astrology.”
Effectively, the campaign against astrology is more political than actually what God thinks of it. If you are someone who is comfortable with the fact that men (and women) are flawed creatures and make mistakes, be it for greed or just a simple error in thinking, then this will be something you can process.
Ultimately, it is for you to decide
I am a huge believer that God speaks to us directly and that our connection to that Divine wisdom is inherent and powerful and essential. You need to decide for yourself. Study it out in your mind and feel it out in your heart. If you come to the conclusion that God and astrology cannot mix, that’s okay. That’s your answer and what is true for you. But if someone comes to a different conclusion, that is not for another to say if it is so or not.
